OV-chipkaart vs. OVpay: Which Public Transit Pass Do You Need?

April 21, 20264 min readMoveHere Team

The way people pay for public transport in the Netherlands has changed rapidly. While the traditional plastic OV-chipkaart is still widely used, most people now use OVpay with their phones or debit cards.

As a student, choosing the wrong one could cost you hundreds of euros in missed discounts. Here is a breakdown of which one you actually need.

1. What is OVpay?

OVpay is the newest system that allows you to "check in and out" using your contactless debit card, credit card, or mobile wallet (Apple Pay/Google Pay).

  • Pros: No need to buy a card, no need to "top up" balance, works on all buses, trams, metros, and trains.
  • Cons: You cannot add student discounts. You always pay the full "standard" fare.
  • Best For: Your first few days in the country, or for visiting friends/family who don't have a Dutch transport card.

2. What is the OV-chipkaart?

This is the classic plastic smartcard. There are two types:

Anonymous (Blue Card)

  • Cost: ~€7.50
  • Usage: You must manually "top up" the balance at machines.
  • Note: To board a train, you must have a minimum of €20 on the card.
  • Best For: Having a backup card for guests.

Personal (Yellow Card)

  • Cost: ~€7.50
  • Usage: Features your photo and is linked to your Dutch bank account.
  • Key Advantage: This is the only card that supports subscriptions and student discounts.
  • Best For: Every international student staying longer than a month.

  1. Open a Dutch Bank Account: You need an IBAN for the automatic payment link.
  2. Apply Online: Go to ov-chipkaart.nl and upload a digital passport photo.
  3. Wait for Mail: The card will arrive at your Dutch home address within 3-5 business days.

5. The "Studentenreisproduct"

If you are an EU student working 32+ hours a month, or a student receiving Dutch study finance (DUO), you are eligible for the Student Travel Product.

  • Free Travel: You can choose between free travel during the week (Week-abonnement) or free travel during the weekend (Weekend-abonnement).
  • Requirement: This product must be loaded onto a Personal OV-chipkaart. It will not work with OVpay.
