DigiD (short for Digital Identification) is your personal digital identity for Dutch government services. Think of it as a secure "master key" that allows you to access health insurance, taxes, student loans (DUO), and municipality services online.
If you plan to live in the Netherlands, you cannot survive without it. Here is everything you need to know about getting your account set up.
1. Why Do You Need DigiD?
In the Netherlands, almost all administrative tasks are handled online. You will need your DigiD for:
- Managing University Enrollment: Using Studielink.
- Student Finance (DUO): Applying for the student travel product or loans.
- Health Insurance: Logging into your insurance portal to submit claims.
- Taxes: Filing your annual income tax return.
- Allowances (Toeslagen): Applying for healthcare or rent allowances.
2. Prerequisites for Applying
You cannot apply for a DigiD from abroad before you arrive. You must meet these three criteria first:
- A BSN (Citizen Service Number): You get this when you register at the municipality.
- A Registered Address: You must be officially registered at a Dutch home address.
- A Phone Number: To receive SMS security codes.
3. The Application Process (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Online Request
Go to DigiD.nl and click on "Apply." You will need to enter your BSN, date of birth, and your registered postal code.
Step 2: Choose Your Security Level
We strongly recommend choosing "Login with SMS verification" or using the DigiD App. Many government services (like DUO) now require this higher level of security; a simple username and password are no longer enough.
Step 3: Wait for the Letter
This is the part that surprises many international students. For security, DigiD will mail a physical letter to your home address.
- Timeline: It usually arrives within 3 to 5 business days.
- Important: Do not lose this letter! It contains the activation code you need to finish the process.
4. Activating Your Account
Once the letter arrives:
- Go back to the DigiD website and click "Activate."
- Enter your username, password, and the activation code from the letter.
- Your account is now ready to use.
Download the DigiD App on your phone immediately after activating. It allows you to log in using a 5-digit PIN or biometrics instead of remembering a complex password every time.
5. Using Your DigiD Safely
Your DigiD is as sensitive as your bank login.
- Never share your password with anyone (not even university staff or government officials).
- Beware of Phishing: The DigiD organization will never send you a text or email with a link asking you to log in to "verify" your account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a DigiD if I'm not a Dutch citizen?
Yes. Anyone who is legally registered in the Netherlands and has a BSN can apply for a DigiD, regardless of nationality.
What if I move to a new house?
Your DigiD stays the same. However, you must update your address at the municipality first; DigiD will automatically update its records from the municipality's database.
What if I forget my password?
You will have to apply for a new DigiD entirely. A new activation code will be sent to your home address by mail.
